Ginnie Come Lately edition by Carola Dunn Romance eBooks Reviews
Lord Amis returns from abroad to be greated with the news from his intended that his father, the earl, has remarried. "A common vulgar female, Pamela Parringale told me, half the earl's age and deeply in debt." Justin sets off to deal with the problem. The heroine is his new step sister.
Mills & Boon large print is set in Times Roman 17 on 18.25pt.
I will not re-cap the story here, for other reviewers have already done a good job of it. This book did not do it for me, simply there were too many people running around in the story--young, old, children, aristocrats... It was an endearing family affair, but not enough substance. Besides, I thought it was awkward to have romantic courtship between step-brother and step-sister. It was a fun read, as long as you don't try to analyze it.
There are very funny moments in this Regency romp but the new family were rude and spoiled jerks in my opinion.
I actually felt for the arrogance hero even though I was supposed to be won over by the kind new family.
It got better about half way through. Not a favorite of mine, but that is only one opinion.
I recommend reading through your local library.
It's such fun to see a supercilious prig brought down a notch or two -- or nine -- as the case may be with the Webster clan. And the very talented Carola Dunn is a master at the art! (She's writing mysteries these days.)
Justin Amis has returned home from his diplomatic assignment to discover that his widowed and reclusive father, Lord Wooburn, has remarried, and become the step-papa of nine children! Nine, ranging from the eldest, very clever Ginnie to the toddler Nathaniel. Their Mama, the new Countess, is of the dithery-female sort, but one who is easily lovable by everyone she meets. Except Justin.
He immediately falls into the trap of believing the worst of everyone, but never bothering to look in the mirror first, and becomes the prey of an imaginative batch of siblings. They never do anything truly harmful, just irritating. And very amusing for the reader.
Of course, eventually, Justin sees the error of his ways, and realizes how fortunate he is to have acquired all these new relatives, one of whom is destined to become much closer than a sister! Positively delicious, and an excellent example of the wonderful comedy-of-manners/house-party type of Regency Romance! Too bad there are so few new releases!
Definitely had an abrupt ending as stated in other reviews, but overall a good portrayal of the time period and good character development.
Pride and prejudice abound when Lord Amis meets his new step-brothers and sisters upon his return from serving in Russia with the English ambassador. Convinced that his elderly father must have been caught up in the clutches of a rapacious, conniving widow, he rushes home...only to find that the newly weds only have eyes for each other and his home has been taken over by the widow's eight children! Battle lines are drawn, and in the end the lord has fallen ( literally) off his high horse and love conquers all. I enjoyed it, and you will too.
I actually didn't keep this book. I have enjoyed some of Carola Dunn's books a lot (Smuggler's Summer in particular) but this one was not good. There was a multitude of characters and only Ginnie really gets developed. Truly the ending is very jarring, I think another review mentioned it but I had never seen it before in a C. D. book so I thought maybe they were being nitpicky. I don't see how anyone can read this book and be completely satisfied when they are done.
