Luc and Dan, two high school students at a Denver boys’ school, meet in the late 1970’s during the glitz and glitter of the disco era, and despite society’s censure of gay love, they, with the help of Luc’s ex-marine aunt, become enamored with each other. This story of their lives is set in Colorado, New Orleans, and Hawaii, as well as San Francisco, where Luc struggles to resolve his doubts about his devotion to their relationship. Can he return to Dan and commit himself to the monogamous union Dan wants while they both complete college to become successful professionals, Luc a banker, Dan a famous lawyer? Neither can foresee the impact his decision and a looming pandemic will have on their lives.

“Oh Danny Boy” is a novel with a compelling story between two attractive, talented young men who meet as juniors in high school in Denver, and we follow them for about 10 years through the ups and downs of their intense relationship. They are easy to relate to, and they enjoy the loving support of all but one of their family members. All the main characters are well developed and easy to imagine in your mind’s eye.It’s hard to know how to describe the novel any more without giving away too much, but I had no trouble staying engaged with the story and rooting for the main characters. There were some episodes that I personally found disturbing, but that’s a matter of opinion. Others may react differently to them. Those looking for steamy sexual situations won’t be disappointed.
I did find a number of avoidable errors in the book (e.g., “belon” instead of “belong” and “venerable" instead of “vulnerable”) that distracted me, but overall I thought the writing was masterful and full of imaginative details that held the story together quite well and brought it to an ending that deeply moved me. I hope the author writes again.
